Engage your older students who have "heard it all before" in a fresh exploration of Noah’s Ark with this interactive lesson unit. Students might think they know a story they have heard since they were toddlers, but are they really that well informed? Twelve thought-provoking questions will challenge their understanding on which they "vote" using included Noah's Knowledge A/B/C/D Answer Sticks. This multiple choice game involves active participation and challenges your students to dive deeper into a familiar story with surprising answers to questions such as:

Challenge #11:

How long did Noah and his family stay on the ark?

A) 40 days and 40 nights

B) 150 days

C) Almost one year

D) Ten years

✔️The correct answer is C but most students will guess A. Why? Because while the “40 days and 40 nights of rain” timeframe is so often taught in story and song, rarely is it revealed that Noah and his family were actually on the ark for a full year!

➡️Students are given a tally sheet to record their guesses before the teacher asks for a "show of sticks" after which the answer is revealed. This sheet allows them to keep track how many questions out of 12 they get correct. My personal experience as a teacher is that the twelve questions in this game are very challenging and it is a rare student who gets them all correct!

➡️All of the questions and answers are included in the lesson plan as well as in the 26 PowerPoint slides (INCLUDED in this bundle). This allows your students to follow along as you read each of the questions and answer options. After each question is read and students have made their guesses, you can easily flip to the next slide where the answer and explanation slide revealed.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITY ☀️

To help students visualize the size of Noah’s Ark, take them outside for a practical exercise using pre-measured lengths of rope and basic mathematical skills to determine whether the ark would fit in both length and width of a space of your choosing (such as a parking lot or field).

MATH WORKSHEET ✖️➕️➖️➗️
We are also including an (optional) "Measuring Noah's Ark Worksheet" which is in itself a mini math lesson on cubits, conversions from cubits to inches and estimating. Once this worksheet is completed, the field measurements can begin! The lesson plan gives step by step instructions for how to create a successful experience for you and your students, keeping them all engaged in either measuring or acting as "flag markers" for every 25 or 50 foot rope lengths. Five post-measurement, age-appropriate discussion questions are provided for both younger and older students.

This lesson is divided into four sections:

❇️Introduction/Color Coding Adam’s Descendants to Noah ~ Genesis 5 has a very rhythmic predictability to it and color coding the passage allows students to see interesting patterns that might be missed with a casual reading.

❇️Noah’s Knowledge Challenge Game ~ description is above

❇️Measuring Noah’s Ark ~ description is above

✝️ What Have I Learned about Jesus Today?

At the end of this lesson (and every lesson in this series), we invite students to ponder the thought-provoking question: "What have you learned about JESUS today?" In this lesson, students make the connection that Jesus, is our ultimate Ark of Safety. By highlighting key verses in Genesis and the New Testament, students are shown that there was/is an invitation, promise of salvation, and security in both narratives.

➡️Important note about this lesson: Much of this lesson was previously published as “Noah’s Knowledge Challenge/Measuring Noah’s Ark”. However, a few key additions have been made to align with our series “Walking Alongside Jesus Through the Old and New Testaments”. First, since color coding of Scripture is a thread throughout this series, we have added “Color Coding Adam’s Descendants to Noah” (Genesis 5). Second, we conclude the lesson with “What Have I Learned About Jesus Today?” This is another hallmark of our lesson series that draws students back to the idea that Jesus was foreshadowed in many (if not most) of the Old Testament stories.

Included in this lesson:

◾️Color Coding Adam’s Descendants to Noah [Worksheet/Answer Key]

◾️Noah’s Knowledge Challenge Student Tally Sheet

◾️A/B/C/D Answer Sticks

◾️Measuring Noah’s Ark [Worksheet/Answer Key]

◾️Jesus, Our Ark of Safety [Worksheet/Answer Key]

◾️“Ark of Safety” Stepping Stone

✔️ALSO INCLUDED: 26 PowerPoint Slides for the Noah's Knowledge Game

⏰️Flexible Scheduling: This 4-5 hour lesson can be spread over multiple days with clearly labeled stopping points.

✝️ Perfect for Sunday school, homeschool or Christian school classrooms! Each lesson unit in our Walking Alongside Jesus series is divided into five sections, each section takes between 30 minutes to an hour. This allows homeschool and Christian school teachers to use it daily in the classroom (thereby completing an entire unit in a week) OR in a Sunday School classroom or youth group once a week (thereby completing an entire unit in a month).

✔️Our goal with each lesson is to combine scholarly study in a fun, interactive way so that students not only experience the rich Biblical narrative but also to whet their appetite for more by learning how to study the Scriptures for themselves.
