This Bible lesson unit focuses on two key events from Numbers 20 and 21 ~ Moses striking the rock in anger instead of speaking to it as God instructed and the bronze snake that was lifted up on a pole providing physical healing for the Israelites who were struck by fiery serpents for their complaints against God.The important connection to this event and how it foreshadowed Jesus is discussed in detail: Jesus is the Lifted One!
✴️Your students will participate in these engaging, hands-on activities:
✔️Color coding a passage (Numbers 20:2-9) to recognize repeated words, patterns and connections that are often missed in a casual reading – a very helpful exercise for the visual leaner!
✔️Reenactment of Moses striking a rock – ideas for creating a large lock and staff are included in the lesson. Students are led to 1 Corinthians 10:4 where they learn that the Israelites “drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ”. Included is an empty tomb visual that is placed on the rock as a stirring reminder of Jesus being struck for our sins.
✔️Create Jesus on the cross and bronze serpent on a pole sticks by gluing them onto tongue depressor sticks using provided color pictures. These are used for a game to determine whether statements apply to Jesus or the snake.
✔️Share the salvation story with younger students using their Jesus and snake sticks.
✔️“Look to the Cross” demonstration which is a life-sized timeline of Biblical history with the cross in the center while students hold names of the heroes of the faith and learned that each either looked FORWARD in faith to the cross (Old Testament) or BACKWARD in faith to the cross (New Testament and beyond). Students come to understand that no one has ever been saved by their good works – it has always been and will always be salvation by faith in Jesus alone.
