Are you looking for a lesson on Korah’s rebellion and Aaron’s rod that budded and blossomed? In this 4-5 hour curriculum unit based on Numbers 16 and 17, students come to understand that it is God who chooses the leaders in authority over us. This lesson concludes by guiding students to the understanding that even Jesus was chosen by God to bring us back into a relationship with the Heavenly Father. Jesus is God’s Chosen One! Written specifically for older students in grades 4-8, this high interactive unit will keep your students thoroughly engaged throughout.

❇️Magnetic Map Activity

With the use of two small button magnets and the included map worksheet, students drag the magnet around the worksheet 40 times (one for each year the Israelites wandered in the desert) – an exceptionally fun way to learn map skills!

❇️Color Coding Korah’s Coup

After introducing students to the concept of a coup, students play a fast-paced “Coup or Nope” game before diving into a dramatic real-life example from Numbers 16. Students use a color coded key to identify and underline the key figures, emotions, complaints, and targets of Korah’s rebellion against Moses and Aaron.

❇️Earthquake Escape Game

Students unwittingly step into the tension and drama of Korah’s rebellion through an energetic, movement-based game that blends the Bible story with physical activity. Students hold “incense censers” (cups of popcorn) and answer twelve yes-or-no questions about the story of Korah’s coup—jumping to the correct side of an “earthquake crack” (black electrical tape) you have created in your classroom. Incorrect answers mean a popcorn penalty and the risk of being “swallowed by the earth,” just like in the biblical account.

❇️Aaron Blossoms into a Leader

This lesson provides directions for creating twelve tribal sticks (tags are included) as well as a budded, blossomed almond stick. With these props at hand, your students can take part in the ceremony outlined in Numbers 17 where each tribal stick is collected and then it is revealed (through an illusion that you create with the use of a duplicate Aaron stick and a large bag) that Aaron’s stick budded and burst with almond just as Scripture describes. We also provide you with directions and ideas for an Aaron’s rod snack craft that students can create and then eat making this lesson truly memorable and impactful.

✝️ What Have I Learned about Jesus Today?

After reviewing the tragic story of Korah’s rebellion, students discover the surprising grace shown to his sons, who were later appointed to vital roles in temple worship and became authors of several psalms. By reading Psalm 46, students reflect on how Korah’s sons expressed deep humility and reverence for God's power. Then students are invited to ponder this thought-provoking question: "What have you learned about JESUS today?" With the help of a colorful spy themed worksheet “Looking for Clues that Jesus was Chosen” students read and code four verses that identify how Jesus was chosen by God—appointed, empowered, and sent to fulfill the plan of salvation. This concludes by inviting students to consider that they, too, have been chosen to fulfill their own unique role in God’s story!
