Save time and shop with confidence! Watch the lesson preview video HERE and the slide preview video HERE
Take your students through the book of Judges with this comprehensive Bible curriculum unit! Designed for upper elementary and middle school students in grades 4–8, this hands-on survey helps students move beyond familiar Bible stories to develop a deeper understanding of Israel's cycle of sin, God's faithfulness, and the need for a righteous King. This complete unit includes everything you need to teach the book from start to finish, including an in-depth lesson plan, PowerPoint slides, study sheet, unit assessment, memory verse and memory passage worksheets, review games, interactive activities, discussion questions, student worksheets, and more. Students will explore all twelve judges with special emphasis on Deborah, Gideon, and Samson while discovering the historical context, major events and key themes of the book.
In those days, there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Judges 21:25
This powerful verse launches students into the most important theme in the book of Judges ~ the repeating cycle of:
Sin → Oppression → Deliverance
Sin: Israel ignored God’s commands and followed their own desires.
Oppression: Sin brought consequences as God allowed enemy nations to overtake them.
Deliverance: When the people cried out, God mercifully raised up judges to rescue them.
Students will take a focused look at Othniel, the first judge of Israel as a clear example of this pattern. They will underline any evidence of sin in blue, descriptions of oppression in red, the Israelites cry for help in black and God’s deliverance by raising up a judge in orange.
As time permits, students can explore all twelve of the judges through this eight-page color coding activity.
Students then prepare for the game by identifying key events in the lives of each of the twelve judges by filling in “The Judges of Israel Fact Sheet” as they refer to the completed color-coding activity. The more facts they have learned and memorized, the better equipped they will be to play a competitive game of “Judge the Correct Judge” card game. With each student having their own colorful set of twelve judges card, this fast-paced Bible game requires fast reflexes and quick thinking.
❤️ More than an Old Testament history lesson, this Bible study highlights a truth that still applies today: people continue to struggle with sin, yet God continually pursues restoration. Ultimately, the Book of Judges points forward to our need for a perfect Savior—Jesus, our Faithful Deliverer.
⚠️ Important Note for Teachers:
The Book of Judges contains difficult topics including violence, revenge, immorality, and other mature themes. This lesson intentionally avoids certain passages, but some references may still be necessary to maintain the storyline. Please preview the lesson carefully and skip any portions that are not appropriate for your students.
