Introduce your students to powerful spiritual lessons and engaging Bible activities in this hands-on curriculum unit based on the Book of Judges for grades 4–8. This 3+ hour unit brings interactive learning, critical thinking, and real-world application—all centered around the key verse in Judges 21:25: “In those days, there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
✴️This foundational verse sets the stage for exploring the recurring cycle found as a pattern throughout the book: Sin ~ Oppression ~ Deliverance.
▶️Sin: Disobedience to God's commands—Israel ignored God's laws, did whatever they wanted, following their own desires.
▶️Oppression: The consequences of sin—God allowed foreign nations to invade and oppress Israel.
▶️Deliverance: God's mercy in action—when the Israelites repented and cried out, God raised up judges to rescue them, often quite miraculously.
✴️The unit features a focused study on Othniel, the first judge of Israel, as a clear example of this cycle. Additional judges are explored using the structured worksheet 12 Judges Highlighting Activity.
✴️To reinforce learning in a fun and memorable way, students will play the interactive "Judge the Correct Judge" Card Game, each with their own deck of colorful Judges Cards. This fast-paced activity encourages quick thinking while helping students internalize the spiritual cycle of Sin, Oppression, and Deliverance.
❤️Beyond historical facts, this Bible study curriculum highlights how humanity continues to struggle with sin, but God, in His great love, always seeks restoration. Even today, He offers deliverance—ultimately fulfilled through Jesus Christ, our perfect Judge and Savior.
☠️Fair warning! Leading your students through the book of Judges is not for the faint of heart. Subjects in this book include blood, massacres, death, human sacrifice, womanizing, revenge, prostitution, and virginity just to name a few. This lesson purposely steers clear of “certain” verses that touch on these subjects, but sometimes it is unavoidable in order to maintain the integrity of the story line. Please read through the lesson carefully and feel free to skip stories or sections that are outside the maturity level of your students.
