Engage your students in an interactive, Bible-based learning experience with this 4-5 hour lesson unit exploring God’s covenant with (and faithfulness to) Abraham and his young son Isaac. Designed for grades 4-8, this curriculum covers Genesis 15, 18, 21, and 22, and focuses on two foundational promises: Abraham, though childless and elderly, would have an heir. His descendants would become a great nation, living in the land God promised. This lesson concludes with the understanding that Abraham’s son Isaac was a mere shadow of a greater reality: Jesus is Our Substitute.

Lesson Highlights:

✳️Live-Action Introduction: Start the lesson with a special classroom guest—a bald volunteer acting as Abraham—who humorously confuses heir with hair! This fun skit (script included) sparks discussion about the importance of God’s promises and the importance of the term heir in the book of Genesis.

✳️Covenants Defined: Using a colorful fill in worksheet, students learn the definition of a Biblical covenant, that they can be conditional or unconditional and that there is often a sign or a symbol of the covenant as a visual reminder of the promise made. Two covenants are covered in this lesson:

  • Covenant #1: An heir! Students learn that if Abraham ever doubted God’s promise of an heir, all he would have to do is go outside his tent and look up at the sky. The stars ⭐️were his reminder that his descendants would be just as numerous, starting with a son of his own.

  • Covenant #2: Land! ⛺️God promised Abraham that his descendants would possess the land of Canaan.

✳️New Names! Through a color-coding activity, students learn that Abram’s name was changed to Abraham and Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah and discover that the meanings of their new names reflect God’s covenantal promises.

✳️Journey to the Top of Mount Moriah: Take your students on a walking journey while carrying rocks and sticks as visuals as you discuss the events and miracle surrounding Abraham and young Isaac on Mount Moriah.

✝️Jesus: Our Substitute – The lesson culminates in the powerful realization that Isaac was a foreshadowing of Christ—the ultimate sacrificial substitute for our sins.

Included in this unit:

▪️19 page lesson plan with clear DO/SAY/READ instructions that can be read or adapted

▪️Genesis 15:1 paper shield

▪️“Heir/Hair” script

▪️Covenant (worksheet and answer key)

▪️Color Coding Names (worksheet and answer key)

▪️Adventures on Mount Moriah writing response worksheet

▪️Jesus our Substitute – both color and black/white versions (and answer keys)

▪️“Our Substitute” Stepping Stone

⏰️Flexible Scheduling: This 4-5 hour lesson can be spread over multiple days with clearly labeled stopping points.

✝️ Perfect for Sunday school, homeschool Bible study, or Christian classrooms!

❓️FAQS❓️

✅️What Christian perspective is used for these Bible lessons?

I am an evangelical Christian who writes Bible curriculum for older students, and I take this tremendous responsibility seriously. Each lesson has a clear focus on what God says in His Word and the lessons are presented age appropriately, thoughtfully and biblically.

✅️What translation of the Bible is used? 99% of the time I use the ESV although on rare occasion I might use another translation such as the NIV.

✅️How can this Bible lesson be used?

Each lesson unit in our Walking Alongside Jesus series is divided into five sections, each section takes between 30 minutes to an hour. This allows homeschool and Christian school teachers to use it daily in the classroom (thereby completing an entire unit in a week) OR in a Sunday School classroom or youth group once a week (thereby completing an entire unit in a month). These lessons are flexible enough to be used in the following settings:

  • Children's Sunday School class

  • Youth Group

  • Private Christian school Bible class

  • Chapel for Christian schools

  • Children's Church

  • Homeschool Bible class

  • Family Bible time
