Blow Your Horns! Engaging Students with the Story of Joshua

Have you ever felt like you were just waiting for something big to happen? That’s how the Israelites felt as they prepared to conquer Jericho. Over and over again, God assured Joshua that the battle was already won. But here’s the catch: they didn’t just sit around. They had to take action!

God's promise to Joshua

Joshua and his people were instructed to march around the city of Jericho once each day for six days. Then, on the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times, shouted loudly, and blew ram's horns. And guess what? The walls of Jericho came crashing down, allowing the Israelites to charge in from all sides!

Bringing the Story to Life

Now, how can we make this powerful story come alive for our students? It’s all about movement and engagement! Consider giving each student a horn. While it may not be a ram's horn, you can find a variety of plastic horns at discount stores like Oriental Trading. A little spray paint can even give them a more authentic look!

Plastic horns for students

Take your students on a journey around your church, school, or home. I once did this with an elementary school class, and it was an unforgettable experience! We created a paper rock wall and placed it on the gate surrounding the playground. Adult helpers cut the ties holding it up as the kids blew their horns. The excitement was palpable!

Why Props Matter

This is Becky from Experience the Bible Creatively, and I can't stress enough: props are always better than paper! When children can actively participate in the story, it transforms their learning experience. They don’t just hear about the walls of Jericho; they get to be a part of the story!

So, as you prepare to teach this incredible story, remember that engaging your students through movement and creativity can leave a lasting impression. This is an experience they will not soon forget. Let’s get them moving and make the Bible come alive!
